David Goffin separates from his trainer Thomas Johansson

The Belgian N.1 ended his collaboration with the Swede.

David Goffin announced Thursday, on social networks, the end of the collaboration with his Swedish trainer Thomas Johansson.

“After two years of working together, Thomas and I decided to end our collaboration,” Goffin wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank him for everything he has done for me and for all the moments we have shared together. I wish him the best for the future. “

Johansson had become the coach of Goffin in February 2018. Johansson, winner of the Australian Open in 2002, and Goffin, had already worked together for a year, in 2016. Johansson was then part of the management of Liégeois, who was trained by Thierry Van Cleemput. The latter remained the coach of Goffin until January 2019 and an elimination in the third round of the Australian Open.

With Johansson, Goffin, who fell back to 33rd in the world at the start of their collaboration, played two finals, in Halle and Cincinnati in 2019, reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and regained the top-10 at ATP. He is now 14th in the world ranking.

The resumption of the season, after the stoppage caused by the coronavirus, was complicated for Goffin who has not won a single match since his round of 16 lost to Denis Shapovalov at the US Open in early September. Beaten as soon as he entered the competition in Rome by Marin Cilic, he suffered the same fate at Roland Garros, eliminated in only three sets by the Italian Jannik Sinner.

Tested positive for the coronavirus, he then had to skip the Saint Petersburg tournament. Without preparation, he lost on his debut in Antwerp against the American Marcos Giron before withdrawing from the tournament in Vienna last week. On Monday, he was eliminated from entering the Masters 1000 in Paris by the Slovakian Norbert Gombos. This is the first time since 2013 that the Belgian No.1 has not conceded five consecutive defeats.

Interviewed in the Thursday edition of Sudpresse and Le Soir, Johansson explained: “David and I discussed a lot, and again this Wednesday morning. Now it’s time for the whole team to take a step back and after that it’s up to David to decide what he really wants for the rest of his career. He will also have to point out what has not worked this season and obviously that there will be changes depending on for 2021. Because we can only move forward by seeking to improve. It will therefore be with a new coach that Goffin will approach the new season.
