Big competition for the Wizards in the Davis Bertans case

This is the priority of the fall for the Wizards: to extend Davis Bertans. The leaders have been repeating it for almost a year. In fact, ever since the Latvian doubled his stats and became one of the best shooters in the NBA. Last February, Washington turned down a few offers, and NBC Sports warns that more are coming to their desks.

As Davis Bertans is an unprotected free agent, the Wizards do not necessarily have their hands on the case, but they can offer him a five-year contract, and exceed the salary cap to offer him a very good contract.

In front of them, the teams which have a lot of money like the Hawks, the Suns and the Knicks, but also the contenders for the title. Yes, our colleagues report that teams are ready to recover the Latvian via a « sign-and-trade ». It’s very rare in recent years, but maybe a well-rounded team can send a player or two against Bertans.

This does not prevent the player from having a say, and his franchise too. But it is a sign that the former Spurs winger is in high demand, and that all means are good to attract him. Not enough to raise eyebrows GM Tommy Sheppard. Here is what he said last December.

« This is exactly the type of player we want for our franchise. I think he wants to be here. Business will happen naturally. There is so much talk in this league. Most of the time it comes from teams that would love to have Davis. Well guess what? One of the teams that would love to have it, the. We intend to keep it. We are delighted with its development. »

Sign-and-trade : operation which consists in signing one of its free agents and then transferring it. Some franchises use this system to avoid seeing one of their players leave without any compensation. That’s what the Sixers did last year with Jimmy Butler before he left for Miami.
