Ally McCoist denies Neil Lennon’s Celtic claim when the stunned hero of the Rangers delivers a grim verdict

Concerned ally McCoist believes Neil Lennon is in the middle of his greatest battle of his long Celtic tenure.

The defiant Hoops boss insisted after Thursday’s Europa League 4-1 against Sparta Prague that he was the right man to change things.

McCoist admits he also has doubts about the 49-year-old’s claim that Celtic’s miserable run of two wins in nine isn’t his ultimate fight in his two-term, eleven-year career as a parkhead manager.

But the hero of the Rangers believes Lennon has the fighting spirit to recover while his team falls into free fall on the field.

McCoist said of BT Sport, “Look, this is the kind of character he is.

“He’s never eluded a problem on or off the pitch in his life and he won’t do it now.”

“Where I would disagree with him, I’m not sure if I can remember many more test times for Neil Lennon or Celtic when I see what they are like at this moment.

“I keep saying, I’ve said for a while that they are going to improve, they have to be improving.”

The loss means Celtic can focus on home affairs to fill the current 11-point gap between themselves and Rangers at the top of the Premier League.

And McCoist has urged the players to make a change and help their manager after the recent disastrous result.

He added: “I would probably have chosen the same side.

“That’s still a strong Celtic site that will do the business, but it didn’t.

“The money will always stay with the manager and head coach. It has been like that for several years, and that won’t change.”

“But the players have to look at themselves, especially defensively.”
