Mathieu van der Poel has suffered a minor concussion from his fall in Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne, according to research by the team doctors on Wednesday evening. The management of the 25-year-old Brabander reports this in a press statement.
Van der Poel ended up in a ditch along the road due to a strong crosswind in the final of the Belgian WorldTour race. At that time he was riding in a leading group of thirteen riders.
The Alpecin-Fenix rider lay motionless in the grass for minutes. Only after a while did he get up. He could step into the team leader’s car independently.
Van der Poel complained of nausea and a sore neck afterwards, according to team boss Christoph Roodhooft. However, he did not have to go to the hospital. On Thursday morning, his situation will be reviewed by the team doctors.
The Driedaagse Brugge-De Panne was Van der Poel’s last race of the road season. On Sunday he won the Tour of Flanders by beating Wout van Aert in the sprint.
