UEFA rejects a European Super League that would mean “destroy” the Champions League

UEFA recalled on Wednesday its opposition to a European Super League project, while Josep Maria Bartomeu, the former president of FC Barcelona, confirmed for the first time the existence of the project on Tuesday, a recurring theme that would favor the big clubs.

The top leader of European football, Aleksander Ceferin, “indicated clearly on several occasions that UEFA strongly opposes a Super League,” said the continental body, asked by the AFP agency.

At the moment of throwing in the towel in front of Barça, Josep Maria Bartomeu announced to the press that the Catalan club had agreed to participate “in a future European Super League between football clubs”, making official the existence of this project of a reserved closed or semi-closed league to the most powerful clubs on the continent.

This old idea of European football, which would allow the big clubs to share the cake of television rights, would compete squarely with the Champions League and the Europa League, organized under the auspices of UEFA on the principle of meritocracy and European qualification. through the results in the national championships.

«The principles of solidarity, promotion, relegation and open leagues are non-negotiable. It is what makes European football work and makes the Champions League the best sporting competition in the world, “UEFA replied.

The European body refuses to “destroy” its queen competition and ensures that a “Super League of 10, 12 or even 24 clubs” would become “inevitably boring” by removing the margin of surprise that a smaller team surprises the most powerful.

Faced with press reports that evoke support for a possible Super League, FIFA referred to the words of Gianni Infantino last week. “As president of FIFA, I am interested in the Club World Cup, not the Super League,” he said in an interview with the Swiss newspaper ‘Aargauer Zeitung’.

“What matters to me is not Bayern against Liverpool, but Bayern against Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires,” he said, assuring that he wants to give clubs “outside Europe” a “global glow.”
