Like every year, the participants of Roland Garros 2020 will be entitled to bonuses. The management of the Grand Slam gave details of what the players will touch during this edition. And many changes could be observed. The coronavirus having done a lot of harm to the circuit, Wimbledon preferred to skip its turn, which is not the case with the Paris tournament. Shifted by four months, it will still take place, from this Sunday, September 27 to October 11. However, the prize-money will be significantly reduced and redistributed in another way, like the US Open, which took place earlier this month.
Roland Garros is lowering its prize-money
In this context, Roland Garros was indeed keen to reduce the bonuses awarded to players. The total allocation went from € 42.7 million to € 38 million. Aware that the best players had less difficulty coping with the situation, the organizers decided to lower their bonuses, with the aim of increasing that of the players, eliminated in the first round. Instead of the € 46,000 won last year, the first losers will receive € 60,000. This boost also extends to qualifying before the final table, with an envelope increased by 27%.
The winners of the 2020 edition will win less
Last year, individual titles brought in 2.3 million euros to their authors; Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty. The bonus will be lower in 2020, at 1.6 million euros, for a coronation on the courts of the Porte d’Auteuil. This is 30.43% less than in 2019. The finalists will also receive less money: 850,000 euros, instead of the previous 1.18 million euros. In front of a complicated edition, Roland Garros was keen to help its players and to maintain the premiums as well as possible, even if the revenues expected by the organizers are much lower than in the years before. This is mainly due to little or no filled stands, depending on the situation at the time.
