Skull Meeting: Beating Penn State on Recruiting, Offensive Line Best in the Country, and Jeremy Ruckert Delivering a Block of Pancakes

It looks like James Franklin officially turned the page.

Word of the day: Ensconce.

“A solid nine.” In the spirit of Penn State’s funeral, the Buckeyes appear to be about to take James Franklin’s final, unspecified top 10 prospect of Pennsylvania.

Derrick Davis, a four-star defense attorney, was visiting Columbus that weekend along with a few other Buckeye engagements, and soundly, he was having a great old time.

“The only other thing about that visit was seeing the other recruits,” said Davis. “It was the first time I got to spend some time with most of them. I knew some of them from camps, but it was my first time that I met a lot of them. We just hung out in a big group . It was a good time.

“Jack Sawyer was really cool,” he said. “He really made me come out of my shell. I was a little calm at first, but when I met him I saw that he was a good guy.”

“My comfort level from one to ten was a solid nine,” said Davis. “The city was great and there is a lot to do and we shared a nice little bond with the recruiting class.

“The defense struggled a little in the first half, which was expected because all of their defense is new,” he said. “Besides that, they picked it up and they looked really good out there. I haven’t spoken to the coaches yet.

Keep in mind that if Ohio State scores three goals against Penn State on Saturday, those games are won three or four years in advance on the recruitment path.

As Lions prepare for their eighth loss in nine attempts this year, 2024 doesn’t look too hot either – and none of those years in between.

BEST DAMN SLOBS IN THE COUNTRY. You won’t find too many Buckeye fans who would say Saturday’s performance on the Ohio State offensive line was terribly exceptional.

And yet…

Our resident soccer connoisseur Kyle Jones agrees that it wasn’t always the best game for our beloved slobs, but also highlighted some of the on-the-fly improvements the offensive line made on Saturday to keep things moving in the right direction bring.

I have no idea how offensive lines are rated by PFF, but my biggest benefit here is that when The The performance was the best offensive line performance in the country that week. The gap between Buckeye’s offensive line and everyone else is possibly a little bigger than I thought.

IT CAN ALSO BLOCK. Jeremy Ruckerts was billed as a close end long before he stepped on Columbus.

Someone should ask Nebraska’s No. 42 what they think of this reputation.

Clutch one-handed catches in the conference title game and pancake blocks against external linebackers – get a close end that can do both.

That’s not fair. Today’s Skull Session is unintentionally a little tough for #teens who haven’t even made up their minds on Ohio State, which is definitely Zack’s territory and usually not my comfort zone.

But when the Buckeyes’ ultimate goal – who plays the defensive line, mind you – scores an Odell-like catch between two cornerbacks in double cover in a seven-on-seven game, I just can’t say anything.

Personally, I think the Buckeyes should require him to sign with Ohio State and then never take him off the football field.
