José María Olazábal.

Jose Maria Olazábal you have already activated the mode in your head Augusta Masters. The double winner of the Green jacket (1994 and 1999) has traveled to the United States this week to refine their preparation for the big event that will be held from November 12 to 15.

Specifically, Olazábal will play two PGA Tour Champions tournaments before the Masters. The first is played this week in Florida. Its about TimberTech Championship, in the The Old Course at Broken Sound, in Boca Raton. It starts next Friday and ends on Sunday. The next tournament, next week, will be the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, which will be played in the Phoenix Country Club from Arizona, November 6-8.

Normally, Olazábal would not have been able to play the second mentioned tournament, since it is the grand final of the circuit and is reserved for the 36 best in the ranking each season. However, this year, because of the Covid-19, has changed. The season will not end in 2020 but will end in 2021 including this year’s tournaments and those of the next. As it is, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship Next week has become one more regular tournament on the calendar and a total of 81 players will participate, so Olazábal may be in the game.

Precisely, in this tournament he could coincide with Phil Mickelson, who has left the door open to play there to prepare for the Masters. Other Augusta champions who could be in Arizona include Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Sandy Lyle o Larry Mize, among others.

Olazábal has played three PGA Tour Champions tournaments this year, all three in March, and his best result was a fifth position in the Morocco Champions. Since the first state of alarm that was decreed in Spain in March, he has not played outside our borders. Yes he has been seen here in the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters in Valderrama and in the Spanish Professionals Championship in Logroño. In both tournaments he had a very good performance, showing that his game is above the results today. In the European Tour he missed the cut due to a fatality on hole 7, while in Logroño he was left out again due to a problem with a local rule.

With these two tournaments the idea is to pick up the rhythm of the competition to reach the best possible Augusta Masters. Of course, in these two Champions League appointments it will also be Miguel Angel Jimenez.
