Kevin Walters will meet with the Brisbane Recruiting and Retention Committee on Friday to revamp the Broncos list.
The Courier Mail reports that up to nine players are under pressure to meet their 2021 contracts – led by $ 2 million trio Matt Lodge, Joe Ofahengaue and Jack Bird.
Despite his four-year contract, Lodge attracts the interest of the New Zealand Warriors and the newspaper reports Walters wants a full medical report on the striker’s battered body before deciding where his future lies.
Ofahengaue has reportedly caught the attention of St. George-Illawarra as the Broncos Bird is being handed over to any club willing to pay the bulk of its nearly $ 1 million salary.
But the squad’s blow couldn’t stop there. Halfback Brodie Croft and Captain Alex Glenn are also discussed, while the non-contractual quartet Jordan Kahu, Sean O’Sullivan, Richie Kennar and Issac Luke are likely to be hit.
Walters faces an enormous task in rebuilding the wooden spoon for the start of next season, starting with the star on the sidelines outside Kotoni Staggs until round 13 or 14 when he recovers from an ACL injury.
Staggs isn’t sure of playing more than a handful of games in Brisbane as he is out of the contract at the end of the 2021 season.
Tevita Pangai Jr., who is currently working at a nursery in Brisbane ready to play again after suffering a COVID injury, will return – as will Anthony Milford, whose career Walters is looking to revive.
“You just want to win and we didn’t do that this year, we didn’t. I know next year will be different, ”said Payne Haas, Laureate of the Year.
“Of course, Kev will have high expectations and we have to live up to that, but that’s the Broncos Club itself. You just have to live up to it. “
David Fifita, who attended the awards ceremony in Brisbane but departed through the official process after not receiving a mention, tops the list of departures after signing with the Gold Coast Titans.
Darius Boyd and Matt Gillett have retired, but veteran Ben Te’o is expected to get another season.
“I haven’t patted anyone on the back, there aren’t any definitive calls right now,” Walters told the courier post.
“However, I’ll meet the club’s recruiting and retention staff (on Friday) and we’ll get stuck on the list.
“I will consider changes, but it won’t just be my decision. We have a committee that makes those decisions on the list and I will discuss with them. “
