Neighbor: Riga marathon should be canceled due to Covid-19 outbreak – Opinions – News

The politician points out that about 15,000 people will take part in the marathon, and emphasizes that even after the distance races, the marathon participants will “suddenly not fade away”.

“This is irresponsible! Health professionals also agree, but are no longer being heard,” he said. Although the LETA politician did not reveal specific specialists to the agency, he called for common sense to be followed.

The neighbor believes that the marathon should be canceled, taking into account that Latvia has the fastest outbreak of the disease in Europe, but after the marathon the situation in our country may deteriorate significantly as the number of patients increases. The MP warned that “we can find ourselves in a deep pit”.

The politician pointed to the case of Covid-19 in Kuldiga, Talsi, Dundaga and Kolka, as well as the fact that it has already been established that we use masks in public transport, as well as remote Saeima sittings are organized. Suddenly allowing 15,000 people to gather, including children and the elderly, “is complete madness,” stressed Neighbor. The politician also pointed out that the Amsterdam, Hamburg, Rotterdam marathons and the Valencia half marathon had been canceled or postponed.

The neighbor also informed Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) about his position at the co-operation meeting, so that at tomorrow’s meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Prime Minister would have the opportunity to make such a decision together with his advisers.

The politician stressed that the marathon could still be canceled because “its money is not worth it” to risk a sharp increase in morbidity.

As reported, at least 15,000 Latvian participants and a “handful” of foreigners will start scattered on the tracks of various distances in the “Rimi Riga Marathon” on the weekends of October 10 and October 11.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the Emergency Medical Service “Rimi Riga Marathon”, the organizers have developed a number of measures to reduce the risks of Covid-19, informs the event organizers.

As it will not be possible to keep a distance of two meters from other runners in the start area, the organizers invite all participants to come to the Freedom Monument in face masks, especially if runners arrive at the start area by public transport, where they are mandatory from Wednesday. Masks will also be a mandatory requirement in the start corridors, although the length of stay will not exceed ten minutes.
