Nations League: Germany does not get beyond a draw against Switzerland

The German national soccer team did not get beyond a draw in the second Nations League group game against Switzerland. At 3: 3 (1: 2), national coach Joachim Löw’s team revealed defensive problems in particular. Mario Gavranovic with a double (5th, 56th) and Remo Freuler (26th) scored for the “Nati”, Timo Werner (28th), Kai Havertz (55th) and Serge Gnabry (60th) for the DFB Eleven.

However, the German defensive construct was not really stabilized. On the contrary: after coordination problems between the fallen Joshua Kimmich and Ginter, Xherdan Shaqiri came to a free end at the six-yard box, Manuel Neuer steered the shot strongly to the corner (4th). The following corner brought the Swiss lead: Robin Gosens headed the cross from the penalty area, but the ball was brought back directly. Because Rüdiger and Kimmich canceled the offside and Neuer stayed on the line and stood badly, Gavrinovic headed over him into the goal (5th).

Nervous German play structure

The shock at the start of the game resulted in a nervous build-up game for the DFB team. Neuer got stuck with a casual chip pass to Haris Seferovic, who initially went on goal alone, but was stopped by Rüdiger in dire need (17th). After a bad pass at the center line of jubilee Toni Kroos, who played his 100th international match, the Swiss came to the next goal: Rüdiger moved impetuously out of the remaining defense and left Freuler, who had started in the direction of the penalty area, alone. The Swiss was served by Seferovic on the right in the penalty area and lifted over the rushed newcomer (26th).

Havertz was responsible for Germany’s answer: The 20-year-old prevailed strongly against Fabian Schär in the opposing half and served Werner, who started on the left in the penalty area, who completed the far corner against the direction of keeper Yann Sommer (28th). In the second half Havertz picked a half-high pass from Schär technically strong from the air, pulled into the penalty area and pushed in before summer (55th).

However, the defensive problems could not hide their own goals: Only seconds after the equalizer, Seferovic failed twice after a combination to Neuer, but Gavranovic from the backcourt shot a powerful in the third attempt (56th). Kimmich had previously missed clearing the ball from the six-yard area. On the other side, Gnabry pushed a cross from Werner with the heel into the far corner (60th). But it wasn’t enough for more. In added time, Schär saw yellow and red.
