Much-discussed Zverev tests negative for corona despite symptoms | NOW

Alexander Zverev has been tested negative for the corona virus. The German was recently on the track with a high fever and throat problems for his fourth-round match at Roland Garros and thus caused quite a bit of consternation.

“The test came out negative, so I don’t have COVID-19,” Zverev told Monday evening Eurosport. “I just have a cold, which is also possible during this corona pandemic. That is not very surprising after we played in the cold and drizzle for the last two weeks.”

The 23-year-old Zverev only told after his lost match against the Italian Jannik Sinner (3-6, 3-6, 6-4 and 3-6) that he had become ill in the run-up to his performance in the fourth round. The current number seven in the world spoke about breathing problems, a sore throat and 38 degrees fever.

The French government requires people with COVID-19 symptoms to be in isolation for seven days and to request a test immediately, but Zverev did not. He was tested on Tuesday 29 September and the result was negative, but that was five days before his match against Sinner.

“It’s normal for my body to run out. I haven’t been able to take a real break after the US Open,” said Zverev, who reached the final in New York on September 14 and lost to Dominic Thiem. “This is my typical cold.”

Due to his fourth round elimination, Zverev did less well than in the previous two years at Roland Garros, when he reached the quarter-finals in Paris. ‘Sascha’ is still waiting for his first Grand Slam title.
