Klopp the moment he heard Liverpool were interested
Jürgen Klopp has pointed out how his most important moment in Liverpool remains his first interaction with the club.
It’s been five years since Klopp became Reds boss, and although he’s led Liverpool to four major trophies since then, including a sixth European and a top division title in three decades, it’s the first phone call with the club that still lives in memory for a long time.
He told Liverpoolfc.com:
“It made all of the rest possible. I can’t forget the moment my agent called me saying Liverpool was interested. And the feeling that I had in that moment.
“I’ve said it a couple of times, I was totally in the holiday mood; We were in Portugal, in Lisbon, with the family, both boys were with us. Ulla and I were sitting outside in a coffee bar.
“Actually, I didn’t take many calls during that time, it was like, ‘Come on, don’t bother me. ‘But then I saw it and it was like I felt like it might be something interesting. So I pick up the phone and he tells me and I felt the excitement inside me.
“But because of all the things I said to my family before, I couldn’t immediately say, ‘Yes! Let’s do this!’ I had to ask: “What is your opinion?” I still remember both boys saying, “Yes!” We look at Ulla and she looks at all three of us: “Oh, it looks like the vacation is over!”
“It was just a very nice moment to have it together. Nothing was decided at that moment, it wasn’t that I had spoken to anyone else. We flew home, then Mike Gordon called me two days later, one day later, whatever. Then I went to New York and all that stuff.
“But that first moment when I became aware of Liverpool’s interest was something very special. And from that moment it got better and better. “
