The result put Villa second on 12 points, with a game against leaders Everton who have 13. Third-placed Liverpool have 10 out of five and Leicester in fourth place is ninth after suffering their second consecutive home defeat.

Barkley, on loan at Villa from Chelsea, snatched the winner out of the blue with a stabbing low shot from 25 yards that pushed Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel into the air as the ball ricocheted off in front of him.

A dreary first half brought a chance at either end. Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez played Leicester as right-back Timothy Castagne before Egyptian striker Trezeguet shot wide after a flowing play by the guests.

Villa, who was on his hindfoot in the first half, stepped forward after the beak with more intent and went just wide in the 51st minute when center-back Ezri Konsa headed just inches.

As the game headed towards a goalless stalemate, Barkley ensured that Villa started the season with four league wins for the first time since 1930, after narrowly avoiding relegation from the top division last season.
