Julia Görges retires – “Thank you for everything”

Germany’s currently second best tennis player surprisingly draws a line under her career. She announces the decision in a moving message – and also makes an announcement.

A bang in German women’s tennis: Julia Görges ends her career with immediate effect. The 31-year-old announced this on Wednesday afternoon in an emotional message on her social media channels.

“I always knew that I would feel it when the right time came to say goodbye to you – the moment has come,” wrote Görges in her post to tennis: “Thank you very much for everything you have given me – You will be in my heart forever. “

The German women’s tennis director Barbara Rittner congratulated Görges on her successful tennis career. “In the Fed Cup, Jule was an absolutely reliable and valuable team player,” said the former long-time Fed Cup team boss. Of course, the decision triggered “a certain melancholy”, explained Rittner: “But I can understand very well that in these difficult times you deal more intensively with the end of your career and then take the step.”

Görges has won a total of seven individual titles, including the high-class WTA tournament in Stuttgart (2011). She celebrated her last tournament victory in Auckland / New Zealand in 2019, her best world ranking was ninth. She belonged to the “golden generation” around the three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber (Kiel), the former top 10 player Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt) and the former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki (Berlin).

Görges played her last tournament at the French Open in Paris. In Roland Garros she lost in the second round against the later quarter-finalist Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) in three sets. In her message, Görges announced: “I am ready to close the chapter on tennis and start a new one, which I am very much looking forward to.”
