Frenchman Arno Demar wins the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia

Frenchman Arno Demar (“Groupama – FDJ”) on Tuesday celebrated the victory in the fourth stage of the multi-day bike ride “Giro d’Italia”, finishing first in the group finish.

Demar won the 140-kilometer plain from Catania to Villafranc Tiren, among which cyclists still had to overcome the third category ascent.

The Frenchman completed the distance in three hours, 22 minutes and 13 seconds, overtaking Peter Sagan from Slovakia and Davide Balerini from Italy as a deceuninck – Quick Step athlete.

In the competition of 172 athletes, the Portuguese is still led by the Portuguese Joao Almeida (“Deceuninck – Quick Step”), who is two seconds ahead of Ecuadorian Jonathan Clever Caisedo (“EF Pro Cycling”) and the Spanish Peljo Bilbao (“Bahrain-McLaren”), for 39 seconds.

It has already been reported that Ineos Grenadiers, an athlete from the Ineos Grenadiers team, has ended prematurely due to a pelvic fracture during the third stage.

Athletes will now move from Sicily to mainland Italy, where they will measure 225 kilometers from Mileto to Camilliatello Silano on Wednesday with two Category 3 ascents in the middle and one Category 1 ascent at the end.

The first four stages of the Italian tour were to take place in the vicinity of Budapest, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hungary refused to accept the stages that took place in Sicily.

This year, none of the Latvians will start the “Giro d’Italia”, but last year the driver of the “Israel Cycling Academy” Krists Neilands took part in the competition.
