A special competition was held in Valencia on Wednesday to break those records. Part of the distance was accompanied by pace keepers, but less than half of the distance they ran along an illuminated trajectory that showed the best way to break records.
Cheptege finished 10,000 meters in 26 minutes and 11.00 seconds, correcting 6.53 seconds for Ethiopian Kenenis Bekele in 2005.
The 24-year-old Cheptege has set three world records this season – in February for a five-kilometer run on the highway and in August for a 5,000-meter run in a stadium.
He is the current world champion in the 10,000 meter distance.
Meanwhile, Guide finished 5,000 meters in 14 minutes and 6.62 seconds. The previous record set by her compatriot Tiruneš Dibaba in 2008 was corrected by Gideja in 4.5 seconds.
The 22-year-old Guide is a world vice-champion in the 10,000-meter distance, but has previously been most successful in athletics.
Both records have yet to be ratified by the World Athletics Union.
