Weißenfels (dpa) – Brose Bamberg started the group stage of the German Basketball Cup with a win. The team of the new coach Johan Roijakkers prevailed in Weißenfels in the duel of the semi-finalists of the preseason against ratiopharm Ulm with 74:65 (35:29).
Michele Vitali was the best Bamberg thrower with 15 points, Troy Caupain stood out at Ulm with 14 points. For the opening game of Group C, 500 spectators were allowed in the small town in Saxony-Anhalt.
Ulm, who were already active in the European Cup, got off to a better start, but Bamberg fought their way back into the second quarter and took the lead with a strong start. The Swiss franc remained decisive, continuously expanding the lead to a maximum of 13 points. Ulm came up again thanks to a good three-way quota, but no longer passed Bamberg.
In the second game of the group, the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg and s.Oliver Würzburg will meet in Weißenfels on Sunday. Game days two and three will then be played in Ulm on October 24th and 25th. The final tournament, for which only the four group winners qualify, is to take place on November 1st and 2nd in Munich.
