The Snipe Class always enjoyed a great presence in our bay, especially in the 70s and 80s, where illustrious names such as Iturrioz, Larrañaga, Flethes, Vierna, Castañeda or Parga filled the showcases with triumphs. Years later, it practically disappeared, so that at the beginning of this century many of the sons of those pioneers decided to take over and refound that Fleet that had given so many joys. The 1st Anniversary Trophy was created with the aim of commemorating 20 years since that re-founding and also establishing a fixed appointment in the Bay of Cádiz within the annual calendar of the Snipe Spain Class. For this, it has been achieved that it is a scoring event for the National Circuit of the Class, which brings together the main regattas within our coastline. In addition, it will be the Andalusian Cup.
The regatta, organized by the Snipe Cádiz Fleet in collaboration with the Andalusian Sailing Federation and the Real Club Náutico de Cádiz, will bring together some 40 boats. The triumph seems highly contested. Among the visiting candidates, Martín Bermúdez and Ángela Pumariega (Olympic gold in London 2012), José Luis Maldonado or Ángel Ballesteros, or the locals Juan Castañeda, David Bllanco or the Oses brothers. In addition, harsh conditions are expected, with a strong southeast wind forecast throughout the weekend.
In the words of Alfonso Díaz-Canel, president of the Fleet, “We could not be more satisfied: being able to bring together 40 boats from all over Andalusia and the rest of Spain with the extraordinary situation we are experiencing fills us with satisfaction and will also allow us to lay the foundations to establish the test as fixed on the national calendar.”
The 1st Anniversary Trophy is organized by the Snipe Cádiz Fleet in collaboration with the Andalusian Sailing Federation and the Real Club Náutico de Cádiz. It also has the support of the Nautical Campus of the Vice President for Culture of the Uca, the Spanish Navy, the Naval Regatta Commission and with the sponsorship of Estrella de Galicia, Cabreiroá, Marisco Cortemar and Gipsy 1927.
