Sinan Kurt was once traded as an upcoming international. But the midfielder kept stumbling over himself. Now he’s just 24. And he’s arrived at a small club in the fourth division.
Straelen is a quiet town on the Dutch border. The 15,000-inhabitant town lists, among other things, the green couch and the fountain on Venloer Strasse on its website. One of the attractions in the small town is the local football club. After all, SV Straelen plays in the regional league.
After a mixed start to the season with five points from six games, the promoted team reacted and entered the transfer market. The fourth division has signed a player who a few years ago was still considered one of the greatest talents in German football. Sinan Kurt, 24, is now playing in the regional league at SV Straelen. It seems the temporary end of a relegation.
Kurt went through all youth departments at Borussia Mönchengladbach and was considered a sure candidate for the professional squad. But he did not play a game for Borussia in the Bundesliga because he blackmailed a move to Bayern at the age of 18. In 2014, Munich paid three million euros for the midfielder after a transfer dispute with Gladbach.
49 minutes Bundesliga
Kurt turned out to be a bad buy. Under the then coach Pep Guardiola, he smelled half-time. There should be only four minutes in the Bundesliga for Hertha BSC. In Munich, Kurt was particularly noticeable with extravagance: he had his hairdresser flown in from Düsseldorf, while on vacation he chartered a helicopter in France for 1900 euros.
After two years with Bayern, he moved to Hertha BSC in 2016. His time in Berlin also turned into a major misunderstanding. Kurt’s descent took its course. Kurt only made two short appearances in the Bundesliga and otherwise only played for the Berlin reserve team. In 2019 he went to the second Austrian league for WSG Wattens.
Kurt was only in the starting line-up in five games in the second half of the season and couldn’t really assert himself in Tyrol either. After promotion to the first division, he fell victim to the rule of foreigners. “Many points spoke for Sinan, and if he had an Austrian passport, he would probably still be with us. Due to the foreigner restriction, it is difficult or not possible that we keep him with us, ”said WSG manager Stefan Köck.
Kurt had been without a club since the summer. His move to Straelen is also a local return to the roots. The place is only 30 kilometers from Mönchengladbach. It is still unclear whether he will have his license to play next Saturday and will be allowed to play against Rödinghausen.
