Labuschagne’s bin leaves Langer in awe, but no guarantee for the T20 spot

Both men face massive hurdles in their first game against England on Saturday morning (AEST), when skipper Aaron Finch and David Warner – whom Langer described as the best opening combination for white balls – and Steve Smith a stranglehold on the positions of the highest order.

Labuschagne is better known for his acts in the longest format, but despite limited opportunities in the Big Bash League, it seems to have a bright future in the T20 arena as well. He made 97 out of 10 games with an average of 12 and a hit rate of 100.

His century included an extraordinary six above Pat Cummins’ bowling.

Labuschagne has had no chance of joining the Australian roster for this year’s T20 World Cup, which has been postponed to 2022, but has given itself a platform to stand up for entry into the tournament in India next year.

“Oh, the first thing I’ll say is that his innings yesterday … are absolutely sublime,” Langer said. “It was really great to see. What a young player we know. Who could have guessed his acceleration of improvement? That’s what we’d love to see.

“We’ve had a pretty even T20 team for the past 12 months and all we can ask is for the guys to hit so hard that they put pressure on the guys there. So whether or not Marnus is going to play this series or not certainly the first game on Friday evening, time will tell, we haven’t decided that yet.

“But he certainly did everything he could, as has always been the case since he got into international cricket.”

“It was classic to see! He met Pat Cummins, the world’s best, on point for six. And partnering with Alex Carey was just so much fun. It was great to see two great young Australian players battle it out against the top Opposition so it was a great practice. “

Stoinis also impressed Langer when he wanted to return to the national team after not playing since the World Cup last year. Although Stoinis is an all-rounder, he is better suited to be at the top of the leaderboard, Langer said.

“I think he’s a great top player, it gives him a lot more time, he has incredible strength, he can get away with the fast bowlers,” said Langer.

“I think he’s the best of the rankings. We also know he’s an adaptable player, an all-rounder and he can play anywhere, but I think he’s in the top position when the opportunity presents itself.” The time will tell.

“You have Steve Smith who is the best batsman in the world and the best opening combo that is difficult to get into, but that’s good, that’s great for us.

“We’ve based our success in Australian cricket on a tough core competition for places. I feel like we’re starting to build on that. That’s positive, not negative.

“Time will tell where Marcus’ next opportunity comes, but he’s doing everything in his power right now – the way he plays, his attitude towards the group – to knock on the door for choices.”
