“The fact that I left had nothing to do with RB or the league. I just wanted to do something new for myself, ”said Werner two days before the Nations League game of the German national team against Spain on Thursday (8.45pm / ZDF).

Werner doesn’t feel any pressure, just an incentive

How well he has settled in was already shown last weekend. It took Werner four minutes to get the Chelsea fans excited. After a long ball from Hakim Ziyech, also new at Stamford Bridge, Callum Hudson-Odoi laid across Werner in the test against Brighton (1: 1), who finally finished.

“An almost perfect debut”, the English newspaper “Sun” attested to him afterwards. The “Mirror” wrote: “It is expected that Werner will be one of Chelsea’s top goalscorers, and he has set a first scent mark.” Werner had scored 28 Bundesliga goals as the best German striker in the preseason – and thus aroused desires. Frank Lampard, his new coach, is thrilled to have Werner on his team. “He showed some of the qualities that I know he has,” said the coach. “I found Timo focused and clever in his style of play. I think his workload and everything around it was a great first step for him. “

Werner said on Tuesday in Stuttgart that he had proven in the Bundesliga what he was capable of. Now he wants to prove himself in the Premier League. “What the club is asking of me is not much less than what I am asking of myself. The club brought me in to score goals. I didn’t go to London to say: 28 goals were great last season in Leipzig – now a few are enough for me. I want to show there again what I showed in Leipzig. It doesn’t feel like pressure to me, but rather like anticipation that I can help to achieve the goals. There is also zero point zero pressure from the club, ”said Werner.

Although he still has everyday life in the league ahead of him, he has already gained initial insights through training at Chelsea and also through the first test match with regard to football in England. Football is a little faster, says Werner, “which can be just fine with me”. That’s what the striker, who is known for his speed, says. He had already noticed, he added, that the defenders are even more robust than in the Bundesliga. “I still have to develop myself further and accept this physical aspect – otherwise you are out of place in the Premier League.”

He signed with Chelsea until 2025. After Antonio Rüdiger, he is the second current German national player to be under contract with the Londoners. Rüdiger, the center-back, has been at Stamford Bridge since 2017 and is happy that Werner has chosen Chelsea. Rüdiger sees it this way not only for sporting reasons – also for purely practical reasons, as he indicated on Tuesday. Because with Werner in the club he could now speak a little more German again, said Rüdiger, who had been in contact with him from time to time in the run-up to Werner’s change and told him only good things about Chelsea and life in London.

Possibly a third German national player will join the two soon. Kai Havertz from Leverkusen is very popular at Chelsea and is apparently about to make a move.
