His release clause was £ 45m, but after spending £ 27m on Gabriel Magalhaes, the Gunners were strapped for cash.
Apart from Partey, Houssem Aouar is another player on Arsenal’s radar, with reports in France suggesting that Arteta is obsessed with the Lyon star.
Because bringing in the French player could be difficult, Arsenal couldn’t help selling a number of players to fund him.
Lucas Torreira
The Uruguay international was left out after a fine debut season, and found himself failing to break into the first team last season.
After picking up the injury, the peak of his struggles came during the summer, when Torreira admitted he is homesick and wants to return to Italy.
Under Arteta, players have to perform 100 per cent for Arsenal or be knocked out and Torreira is in the latter category.
