Antwerp Bruny Nsimba. It is quite possible that you will soon associate that name with that young striker from Antwerp than with that cub from the Lion King. An introduction to ‘the next big thing’ of Deurne-Noord.
It is bigger and faster than Mbokani. Last weekend he was in the base at Antwerp for the first time, he was immediately good for an assist. Things are going fast for Bruny Nsimba, who doesn’t even have a professional contract yet. Although that will probably change soon, both club and player want to continue with each other.
“That will be okay,” he tells us. “It’s a matter of time. But the fans can rest assured: I feel good here, I will stay with Antwerp. ”
It’s time to settle down. Nsimba has already had a small odyssey. He takes his first football steps at Anderlecht, then moves to Denderleeuw, to end up at Genk via KV Mechelen. He exchanged the latter club for the Great Old last year.
I have character and I know what I want. That’s different from ‘being difficult’, right?
Bruny Nsimba
“Leaving Genk was the best for everyone. I have no idea if they had any plans for me, I also had a difficult period there. In any case, I made the right choice ”, Nsimba knows. Wesley Sonck, who worked with him for several years as a striker coach, calls him a “fantastic guy, who sometimes was nothing to do with”. Nsimba is not a difficult boy, he says. “I do have character and I know what I want. But that’s different from ‘being difficult’, right? I do everything to make it, live continuously like a pro. That I would be the new Mbokani? Well, you don’t have to. We each have our qualities. And it just starts for me. I still have to make it happen, still have a lot to confirm. I am a very down to earth guy, no one who will float or make himself bigger with small talk. I don’t like it as much when my friends say ‘oh, there, the professional footballer’. I’m just Bruny. ”
We saw ‘Simply Bruny’ for the first time this summer on an internship in Germany. However, he had not left with the players’ bus and was not on that bus when he returned home. How did that happen? Antwerp played two exhibition games, and because there were some injured, Nsimba – along with two other U23 – was driven back and forth twice to participate. In the end he was in the car for 14 (!) Hours. To participate once for 45 and once for 30 minutes. “Heavy, but that’s part of it. I even got into the car for one second ”, he laughs.
During the last cup final, the football world got to see him for the first time. Thanks to … the coronavirus. “In May, when the final took place normally, I wasn’t even in the squad. Bölöni had sent a few young people to the B team for a while. So Covid helped me. Strange how it can run sometimes, isn’t it? ” (MVS)
