Van der Breggen wins time trial at European Championship | Cycling

Van der Breggen, who also became Dutch champion on the road last weekend, completed the 25.6 kilometers in 34.03 minutes.

She finished more than half a minute earlier than Ellen van Dijk, who finished second. The Swiss Marlen Reusser took third place.

Van der Breggen did not have both the Dutch road title and the European time trial title on her honors list. The previous four editions of the European Time Trial Championships were all won by Van Dijk.

“When I saw the course, I already knew that I had a good chance,” said de Zwolse afterwards. “We were able to focus a lot on this during the corona period, so I’m glad that it pays off like this today. With the undulating hills in this region you have to shift well to take the speed with you in the climbs. I like that. We have to wait and see what we can do in competitions in the coming period, but for now I have a very good week ”, she laughed.

Küng takes title in men

The Swiss Stefan Küng claimed the men’s title. The Groupama – FDJ rider was faster than French rider Rémy Cavagna and two-time European champion Victor Campenaerts from Belgium after 25.6 kilometers.

Campenaerts captured the European title in 2017 and 2018. Last year the title went to his fellow countryman Remco Evenepoel. He was unable to defend his jersey on Monday after a heavy fall during the Tour of Lombardy, in which he suffered a fracture in his pelvis. Evenepoel left the hospital in Herentals on Monday.

Campenaerts, however, could not come to the time of Cavagna, who clocked 30.35 minutes and stayed above it for four seconds. Küng was much faster than the Frenchman from Deceuninck – Quick-Step. With 30.18 he took the European title for the first time.
