Tahith Chong’s loan exit from Manchester United in doubt

Werder Bremen’s sporting director has questioned the loan proposal for Tahith Chong from Manchester United.

Bundesliga club boss Frank Baumann has evaluated the chances of striking a deal at “37.84 percent”, while MEN Sport knows that any move that takes place will not stand until the end of United’s Europa League campaign.

Chong is one of many United players the club is keen to loan out this season as they try to bridge the gap between under 23 football and senior play. James Garner, Dylan Levitt, Matej Kovar and Di’shon Bernard are among others who may be leaving on temporary arrangements, U23 manager Neil Wood said.

Werder Bremen was previously thought to be close to closing a seasonal contract for 20-year-old Chong.

But Baumann told German media Bild that a lot depends on when United’s Europa League campaign ends.

“This question is part of the talks,” he said, with United in the semifinals against Sevilla this Sunday. The final is set for Friday 21 August if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team arrives there.

Have your say in our United end-of-season poll:

Chong agent Erkan Alkan had previously said a deal was very close to completion with Bremen, although Baumann is more cautious.

He added: “There is still a lot to clarify. I have been in business for long enough to know that a transfer like this can fail due to many things. “

Chong made 12 senior appearances for United in the 2019/20 season and is still awaiting his first goal in men’s football. He is impressed with the Under 23s and signed a new two-year contract extension in March this year. And with United seeking a deal for Jadon Sancho, Chong’s chances of getting first-team football seem limited in the short term.
