Should the Phoenix Suns consider trading Ricky Rubio?

The Phoenix Suns could make some big moves this off-season. Should one of them trade Ricky Rubi, who has played well for them this season?

After a hugely successful run in the NBA’s Orlando bubble, you wonder if the Phoenix Suns are making any big moves this offseason. One of those potential big moves could be trading Ricky Rubio. Rubio was a big reason why the Suns were as good as they were, but James Jones could decide to turn the page and prepare for future success.

Recently, the Phoenix Suns have been linked to Davis Bertans and Fred VanVleet, and to get one of them into free agency, the Suns may have to consider swapping Ricky Rubio. Overall Rubio had a great season. He averaged 13 points, 4.7 assists, and 8.8 assists out of a career best of 3-point 36.1 percent.

Should the Phoenix Suns trade Ricky Rubio?

Phoenix fans on Twitter have been very opposed to the idea of trading Rubio, but this is likely due to the recency bias. In my opinion, the Suns are future fixated on the small / mighty with Mikal Bridges and Kelly Oubre Jr, and they are obviously set with Deandre Ayton and Devin Booker, but still lack a future point guard.

Rubio could hold serious commercial value after showing his worth last season. A team like Indiana could try to make a direct point guard swap. Indiana had an interest in Rubio last season and Phoenix would have been smart about giving them a call on Rubio for Brogdon. Brogdon was once a member of the 50/40/90 club and played very well for the Pacers. Brogdon is a guy who goes first who plays hard on defense and would fit the young but experienced role for the Suns.

Another point guard rumored to be in the trading block is Lonzo Ball. Lonzo underperformed, to say the least, but the culture the Suns have built could help him turn the tide. However, the Suns may also have to part ways with the tenth overall pick in this year’s draft, and if New Orleans asks, hopefully, the Suns could also trap someone else in the deal.

I hope the Phoenix Suns don’t go trading Rubio just for the fun of it, but if they can find a good deal, I agree. Rubio at his worst was terrible, but at his best, he is certainly the most talented point guard the Suns have had since Steve Nash.

One of the main reasons for trading Rubio is to free up space for the VanVleet limit. It would make more sense to trade him than Kelly Oubre from the point of view of need. So, if the Suns manage to select Killian Hayes at ten, they’ll be in good shape.

There are a lot of options for the Suns to consider, and they will likely end up keeping Rubio, but if I were the Suns I would thank Ricky for everything he has done and try to find the point guard of the future.
