James Lockhart retires after 49ers demanded waivers

The 49ers claimed undrafted rookie James Lockhart on Saturday. Lockhart, however, informed the team that he Resigned, Eric Branch of Chronicle of San Francisco reports.

Pittsburgh cut Lockhart on Friday.

Lockhart, 23, was not drafted from Baylor in April. He signed with the Steelers as a college free agent.

He spent two years at Texas A&M and two at Baylor, playing 28 games over four seasons. Lockhart had 54 tackles, seven sacks, one forced fumble and two breakthroughs.

Last season at Baylor, Lockhart made 8.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks.
