Several players exited as chefs begin padded workouts

The Kansas City Chiefs had their first padded practice of 2020 training camp on Friday morning. The team will have a total of 14 such practices before the start of the season on Thursday, Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans.

Injuries and absences

Defensive end Frank Clark, tight end Deon Yelder, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi – as well as defensive linemen Devaroe Lawrence and Demone Harris – were not in play today.

After practice, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Clark had a stomach virus; Reid was careful to say he is not infected with COVID. Reid said Harris and Lawrence were excused for personal reasons – and that Yelder had “slight” groin tension.

Offensive lineman Martinas Rankin, safety Juan Thornhill and cornerback BoPete Keyes – all still currently listed as physically unable to perform – were also absent from the session, but worked with coaches on the sidelines.

Reid revealed that Keyes had an orbital fracture – apparently in his jaw – which he sustained before arriving in Kansas City.

We’ll have more of the post-workout press conference with Reid, securities Tyrann Mathieu and Tedric Thompson – and man of the hour, Travis Kelce – shortly.
