Djokovic and his competitors were playing the first ATP Tour event in five months, following the coronavirus pandemic that disrupted the sport.

The Serbian had to be treated for a neck problem during the match and looked rightly below his maximum fitness, but managed to avoid all four break points against Sandgren in a solid set up for the US Open.

“I am pleasantly surprised at how I recovered and felt today, only physically in general, but also with the neck in particular,” said 33-year-old Djokovic.

“I’m as close to the painless neck as possible, maybe only 5 to 10% more and that’s it. I feel very good.”

Djokovic’s winning streak leaves the tennis world stunned

The 17-time Grand Slam champion made it to the quarter-finals of the US Open preparatory event, thanks to a 6-2 6-4 win over American Tennys Sandgren.

The world number 1 seemed indifferent to the pain in his neck that forced him to retire his opening double on Sunday and battle qualifier Ricardas Berankis in his second-round singles match on Monday.

But he was clinical in his fight with Sandgren, winning 84% of his first serve points and wiping out all four break points he faced.

Djokovic was also adamant in attack, scoring all 11/11 points.

The world number 1 even managed to pull off an incredible shot, where he dropped the racket from Sandgren’s hand.

The American surrendered to losing the point when Djokovic smashed a bullet-like blow to the head that jolted the racket from the 29-year-old’s grip.
