NBA: the playoffs will resume on Saturday after the protest of the players

The NBA has confirmed that there will be no games for the third consecutive day, but the play-offs will resume on Saturday.

Blake, a black man, was shot seven times in the back by the police Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee.

The WNBA said it will resume playing on Friday after postponing all of its games in the previous two days.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Michele Roberts, executive director of the NBPA players association, issued a joint statementExternal Link Friday, saying yesterday there was “a sincere, passionate and productive conversation between NBA players, coaches and governors about the next steps to further our collective efforts and actions in support of social justice and racial equality.”

He added that “all parties have agreed to resume” the play-offs on Saturday provided that “the league together with the players will work to implement the following commitments”:

  • The NBA and its players decided to immediately establish a coalition for social justice, with representatives of players, coaches and governors.
  • In each city where the league franchise owns and controls arena ownership, team governors will continue to work with local election officials to convert the facility into a voting venue for the 2020 general election to allow for a Safe Person voting option for communities vulnerable to Covid.
  • The league will work with players and network partners to create and include commercials in each NBA playoff game dedicated to promoting greater civic engagement in national and local elections and raising awareness of voter access and opportunities.
