Looking like a nerd fresh out of college, Colin Morikawa gave a display of calm and good game to take the PGA Championship thanks to an error-free final lap of 65 strokes. It can be said that the player born in Las Vegas 23 years ago did not miss a single stroke on the 18 holes, he never seemed to feel the pressure to face the most important Sunday of his career. A stellar triumph in an incipient career with only 28 tournaments played in the PGA Tour, among which he already accumulates two victories and two second places. After his experience in the US Open last year where he debuted professionalism after qualifying in the previous phases. The victory in a major comes only in his second attempt, something only comparable to Tiger Woods who won his first major as a professional, the 1997 Augusta Masters, although the Californian already accumulated the experience of six great disputed as amateur.

Morikawa belongs to one of the most talented generations of golfers to come from the American college, led by Matthew Wolff’s triumvirate, Victor Hovland, where Morikawa himself looked like the ugly duckling. When the three of them made the leap to professionalism late last season, Morikawa went almost unnoticed.

The last day of the first major of the season was marked by equality in the qualifying table, until Morikawa took off with a birdie on the 14th hole and certainly the hit of the tournament; the drive at the exit of the 16th hole, a par 4 just over 300 meters. A perfect shot that left a putt of just a couple of meters for the eagle, which the new golf star was not going to miss. The two shots ahead made him play even more relaxed the final two holes where he had two birdie opportunities. I didn’t need them, not a hint of nervousness for a quiet celebration now as the winner of the Wanamaker trophy. Morikawa took the victory ahead of the English Paul Casey, and the American Dustin Johnson, seconds classified within two strokes of the leader.

Jon Rahm, reclaims the world number one

The only surviving Spaniard of the tournament, Jon Rahm finished the last day with a meritorious 66 stroke cardToday, the Spanish putter did respond and the important birdies on holes 16 and 17 made him finish in 13th place. His good result, together with the loss of positions of Justin thomas no longer the victory of Dustin Johnson, a week later, they return the title of world golf to the Spanish player.
