Many falls on the first stage of the Tour de France

There are no crowd of spectators in the Corona crisis at the start of the Tour de France. But the drivers fight with the wet road. There are numerous falls. At the finish a Norwegian celebrates the stage win.

Dhe Norwegian Alexander Kristoff won the first stage of the 107th Tour de France. The 33-year-old won on Saturday after 156 kilometers with start and finish in Nice, ahead of the Danish world champion Mads Pedersen. The German drivers played no role in the decision. The stage was overshadowed by numerous falls on a wet road.

Despite the increasing number of corona infections, spectators were allowed on the route, but in limited numbers. The initially planned 5000 spectators were not allowed in the finish area. There were also no large crowds on the roadside.

The region on the Côte d’Azur belongs to the “Red Zone”, where the virus is particularly strong. In the past few days, the number of infections had skyrocketed. On Friday, the French Ministry of Health registered 7,379 new cases in just 24 hours and spoke of an “exponential increase”.
