Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes says Eric Cantona’s comparisons are premature

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes downplayed comparisons with Eric Cantona after a whirlwind start to his career at Old Trafford, insisting that he needs trophies on his resume before he can begin achieving French status.

Fernandes has made an immediate impact since joining Sporting Lisbon in January, scoring 11 goals and placing eight to take United to third place in the Premier League and Europa League semi-finals.

His impact has been compared by former United players to that of Cantona, who joined Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United from Leeds United in the middle of the 1992-93 season and helped end 26 years of waiting for a championship title.

“It’s really nice for me to listen to him and get talked about along with names like that,” Fernandes, 25, told the club’s website on Saturday. “For me, Cantona has been an extraordinary player for the club and I have to do much better to be compared with him.

“I am really happy with what I have done, but I am not satisfied as the coach said.”

On Sunday United will face Sevilla in the round of 16 of the Europa League hoping to have the third luck after falling in the semi-finals in the League Cup against Manchester City and in the FA Cup against Chelsea.

“Coming to Manchester means winning trophies. I will be happy to have one at the end of this season if we win the Europa League,” added the Portuguese international.
