Manchester United and Phil Jones received a formal apology from Twitter after a post from the company’s official UK account mocked the defender.

Social media account @TwitterUK posted Tuesday night: “Name a better footballer than Phil Jones”.

The post was later deleted following a series of complaints from users, as well as one from United.

Twitter, however, said the post was intended to promote a new feature on its platform that allows a user to choose who can reply to a tweet.

A Twitter spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Our goal was to showcase our new product feature, Conversation Controls, which allows you to select who can reply to a Tweet.

“It was not our intention to cause any upset and once we realized our mistake, we immediately deleted the Tweet.”

Jones has only made eight appearances this season due to injury.

And the 28-year-old will miss the remainder of United’s Europa League season this summer due to a knee problem.

“Phil followed a personalized training program during the post-lockout period to optimize recovery from a knee problem,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said last week.

“It was a good opportunity as we had sufficient coverage in defensive positions for the remaining Premier League games and will continue to work with an athletic trainer at the Aon Training Complex while the team is in Germany.”
