Hamilton in front, Vettel and Ferrari back

Old picture of the Formula 1 classic: The Silver Arrows are fast in Belgium. Lewis Hamilton starts the race ahead of Valtteri Bottas. For Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel it is a qualifying to forget.

LWith a track record time, ewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the Formula 1 classic in Spa-Francorchamps. The world championship leader and six-time world champion relegated his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas to second place with a lead of over half a second in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Mercedes has taken all pole positions so far this season. For Hamilton it is the 93rd of his career and the fifth this year. Hamilton starts from pole for the sixth time at Spa.

Third place went to World Championship runner-up Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, he was only 15 thousandths of a second slower than Bottas. Sebastian Vettel was eliminated as 14th in the second knockout section. He will have to start the race in the Ferrari this Sunday (3:10 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for Formula 1, on RTL and Sky) from the seventh row on the grid. Teammate Charles Leclerc will be 13th next to Vettel.
