Big Blue View Mailbag, 08/29: What will the Giants do after Xavier McKinney’s injury?

Hello, New York Giants fans! Let’s open the Big Blue View Mailbag and see what questions you have today.

Ed says: Jason, this question comes up quite often. It’s a strange year with COVID-19 spoiling team preparation, which is especially difficult for a young team with a rookie head coach like the Giants.

Obviously it would be nice to win, oh, seven or more games. I’ve said it many times, however, I don’t think that’s the goal this season. I think this season is all about whether Daniel Jones and Joe Judge are the right guys as a quarterback and a head coach. If the Giants come out of this season believing the answer is ‘yes’ on both counts, then it’s a successful year. If you have these two pieces, the rest should fall into place.

Ed says: Kevin, initially I’m pretty sure that means Julian Love will be safe free. The question is whether they trust Montre Hartage or Sean Chandler enough to use them in triple-security packages. If they don’t want to go in that direction, who is playing after Love, Jabrill Peppers, James Bradberry, Corey Ballentine and Darnay Holmes?

The judge said the Giants would sometimes use up to six defensive backs. Right now, I can’t tell you who the other might be, although I would risk assuming defensive coordinator Patrick Graham might have more faith in Hartage than anyone else.

Jeff Newman asks: It became evident that Grant Haley is a very good tackle, but not good on coverage. Are you talking about getting him from the corner of the machine to safety? The security of the box would take advantage of its strengths and minimize exposure to its weaknesses.

Ed says: Jeff, it’s funny you mention that. I didn’t see Haley working there and I’m not sure if the Giants might consider him in a safety role, but our Chris Pflum speculated on the idea. For me, Haley is too small for the 195 pound box. Playing at the line of scrimmage and dealing with offensive tackles and tight ends is a tough job at this weight. Do they think it is safe to play? I do not know.

Bruce Frazer asks: Gosh another hit in high school. With McKinney’s status unknown for the foreseeable future, are the Giants “dipping their toes” into what is left of the free agent market? In your opinion, are there any free agent securities still worth looking into, or are they loyal to the untested young players they have in the camp?

Ed says: Bruce, don’t forget the Giants will likely add cornerbacks Brandon Williams and KeiVarae Russell to the roster soon. These two guys are now. going through the test protocol. Chris looked at the guys left in the market who could play it safe, and the only really scheming players in the market are Logan Ryan and Tony Jefferson. If that makes financial sense, the Giants might add someone. Or, they could wait for list cuts to be made in a week’s time and see if someone interesting touches the waiver thread.
