Thiago Silva has signed a one-year contract with Chelsea after leaving Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, the club announced.

The Brazilian defender ended his stay in the French capital after PSG decided not to offer an extension to their captain.

“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea,” said Silva. “I’m delighted to be part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to fight for the win.

“See you soon, Chelsea fans, I’m looking forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.”

Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaia said: “We are delighted to be able to add to our squad a player with the proven world-class credentials of Thiago Silva.

“After performing at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt that his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here. Thiago will be a great adaptation and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honors. “

The Brazilian international’s contract with the French club expired in June but he signed an extension that allowed him to play in the Champions League.

The 35-year-old is confident he still has three to four years of top-tier European football and has turned down a two-year deal from Fiorentina to join the Blues.

Chelsea, who have had a busy summer transfer window with signings such as Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, were in part drawn to the defender as they didn’t have to pay a transfer fee.
