WILD CARD POWER RANKINGS

Justin Rose … Which JR will you show this week? He probably had a fleeting thought of the same while rebooting. For the record, and dating back to the Farmers, he has lost seven of his last 11 cuts. It is not a misprint. He was runner-up here in 2018 and finished T10 in 2017, but much like Jordan Spieth (below), Rose’s creepy concern over the inconsistency of Rose’s tee-to-green doesn’t guarantee our confidence. Not here and especially not now.

DRAW

Tiger Woods… Until he starts to miss the cuts, a healthy version of the 82-time winner of the PGA TOUR always deserves this respect. He has guaranteed two starts in these playoffs, but it would be an inconvenience if he didn’t find a way back to East Lake even opening as seeded 49. The last winner at TPC Boston (2006) before the playoff era and his track record since then has been consistently strong. The same can be said of wherever he plays, of course, but that’s still no reason to overlook his field experience. Because you never, ever, consider putting it back on the bench at the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf and watch what happens.

Phil Mickelson … This is supposed to be fun, but when isn’t it? The 2007 champion has five top 10s overall at TPC Boston, including a T6 in 2017 and a T12 in 2018, the latter of which having survived the number cut. Co-runner-up at TPC Southwind three weeks ago, where he has already played exceptionally well, so it makes sense that he will do it again on the next court which was nice.

Paul Casey … His last 10 scores on three courses, including a WGC and a major: 69-67-68-67-68-66-67-66-69-69. Eleven of his last 12 competitive rounds at TPC Boston have produced red numbers, and he is still seeking revenge for wasting a three-shot lead by entering the final in 2016, eventually settling for the second.

Kevin Kisner… The formidable performance at Sedgefield met his expectations and T3 was his second podium of the second half. Expectations are lower than TPC Boston. It’s a 4 for 4 with two top 25s on the track, but even if it goes in the right direction, it’s been a minute since he made noise in such a deep field.

Abraham Ancer … In his only previous attempt here in 2018, he entered the final round with full possession of the lead, and then shot 73 to finish T7. He’s been in command of his game for most of the reboot and hasn’t missed a cut anywhere in over 10 months. Special green light.

Scottie Scheffler… In 24th place, he opens the highest playoffs among eight qualified rookies. He recently regained control of my subjective Rookie ranking thanks in part to an increase in T22-T15-T4 through the PGA championship.

vanishes

Jim Herman … If lightning could strike the same spot three times, it would be renamed with him. Everything in the playoffs is a bonus, but he’s never been presented as a guy who can ride a beat for more than one tournament. He proved it once again at the Wyndham championship by going 16-under 124 at the weekend en route to victory.

Brooks Koepka … It almost seems like we’re chasing the shadows. Although the chasing players don’t have a seven point lead, only they should swing to the fence as you could get a quick 3-0 in the middle. I’m sure I won’t give you the sign to take. Don’t let anyone bother you about it.

Rickie Fowler … As he continues to trust his new swing, he lands in a place that has rewarded him for his efforts. Winner here in 2015 with a couple more top 25 in the last four visits overall, he also climbed to three top 25 in the last five starts. This isn’t strong enough to be accepted in the long run, but it’s still measurably better than the alternative. It is not enough to put it above the plethora of other choices.

Tommy Fleetwood… He enters his third Playoff in 89th place, so he has work to do to reach East Lake for the third time. His shape upon his return this summer was suspicious at best. If you don’t invest and he moves on, the confidence jolt he’ll get will likely reason to get on board next week because the league leaders in the PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf probably won’t want to attend an encore performance this right after a relative drought.

Jordan Spieth … It continues to present possibilities and glimmers, but ignores the story of the path in favor of the scuffle.

Marc Leishman… Only 3 out of 6 at restart with nothing better than a T40 at the Memorial. In fourteenth place in the FedExCup, he has time to continue honing his game, but has done nothing to suggest that a breakthrough is imminent.

Charley Hoffman… It’s been 10 years since he won at TPC Boston. He added a third solo five years later, but hasn’t had a resonance since. Up and down for two seasons now, 20 of the 43 cuts are missing.

RETURN TO COMPETITION

Pat Perez … He left Sedgefield during his second round of the Wyndham championship with a sore foot. In 79th place in FedExCup points, he has nothing to lose and everything to gain at TPC Boston. Hence, as it provided consistent performance during reboot, consider fractional ownership in DFS.

Notable WD

Vaughn Taylor… He’s committed and retired early from each of the last four events dating back to the Barracuda Championship. He mentioned an injured rib. He is the only one who qualified for the playoffs who gave up on Tuesday at noon. Seeded 75 °, cannot advance.
