Europa League round of 16: Bayer Leverkusen beats Glasgow Rangers

Sevilla FC are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. In the round of 16 against AS Roma, the record winner of the Europa League prevailed 2-0 (2-0), the goals were scored by Sergio Reguilón (22nd minute) and Youssef En-Nesyri (44th).

There was no first leg due to the coronavirus pandemic, which is why the pairing was decided with a single game. This took place in the stadium of MSV Duisburg, one of four venues in North Rhine-Westphalia for the final tournament of the Europa League.

Seville’s next opponent will be determined between Olympiacos and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who will play against each other in the evening (9 p.m., stream: Dazn).

Seville’s Lucas Ocampos fired a dangerous shot from the left corner of the box in the seventh minute, which AS goalkeeper Pau López was able to steer over the bar. Shortly afterwards, central defender Jules Koundé headed the crossbar from a corner (12th).

The 1-0 came after a game shift from Éver Banega to left-back Reguilón, who passed the ball past Bruno Peres towards the center and pushed it into the penalty area at high speed. He was lucky there that goalkeeper López couldn’t fend off the weak, imprecise finish (22nd). In the 30th minute, López did not look good again as he sprinted out of his goal after a through pass to Jesús Navas, despite two defenders remaining close to the ball. Navas rounded the keeper, but put the ball too far in front of him.

Just before half-time, Sevilla had the opportunity to counterattack, initiated by a through pass from Joan Jordán to the right wing, where Ocampos escaped a tackle from Roger Ibanez and crossed from the baseline. López was there, but the ball slipped through him, allowing En-Nesyri to raise in the center (44th). A third Sevilla goal by Koundé was withdrawn after a VAR review due to offside position (74th). In stoppage time, Rome’s Gianluca Mancini saw the red card for assault in a header duel. (90. + 10)

Bayer Leverkusen have reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup for the first time in twelve years. In the 1-0 (0-0) in the second leg against the Rangers, coach Peter Bosz’s team didn’t let any tension arise. Leverkusen had won the first leg in Glasgow 3-1, Moussa Diaby (51st) was the only goalscorer in their own stadium.

At the beginning of the second half, Charles Aránguiz outplayed the Glaswegian defense with a high through pass into Diaby’s run, which cleverly took the ball and completed it from close range. In the first round, Leverkusen could have taken the lead on several occasions through Kai Havertz (22nd), Diaby (38th) and Kevin Volland (45th).

In the round of the last eight, Leverkusen will meet Inter Milan, who beat Getafe 2-0 (1-0) on Wednesday evening. The game should take place on Monday, August 10th (9 p.m., stream: Dazn) in the Düsseldorf stadium.
