Beach volleyball – all against Henry – sport in the region

This weekend, Bavaria’s beach volleyball players will determine their national champions in Munich’s Olympic Park. The competitions take place without spectators, but for the first time they are completely climate-neutral.

One thing is certain for the Bavarian beach volleyball championships, which this year will be held for the second time on the facility of the Central University Sports opposite the BMW World in Munich’s Olympic Park. The coming weekend will be a lot less bustling than two years ago in the same place. At that time, more than 1500 spectators attended the finals of the student world championship on the recently inaugurated facility, it was the last really big beach volleyball event in Munich so far, which also made a lot of advertising for sand sports. A year later, some spectators watched the premiere of the Bavarian title fights on the ZHS system, but much less than at the World Cup. On the coming Saturday and Sunday, due to the corona, no fans will be allowed in the title fights, which will take place with 36 women and men duos on six fields. The predicted rain and temperatures of around 16 degrees should not attract that many visitors to the park anyway.

In Michaela Henry (SV Lohhof) and Tiana Nicolaus (Beach4U), not only two women from Munich, but also the women’s duo that dominates the Masters Tour this summer, will compete in the Bavarian championship. They won all the qualifying tournaments they competed in in Freising, Ingolstadt and Munich. Henry, who could win her sixth national title, and Nicolaus, who recently joined the newly founded, first pure beach volleyball club in Munich, are therefore the top favorites for the coming weekend. Even though they are playing together for the first time this season. Two other local heroes, Hana-Marie Schieder and Kristin Standhardinger (SV Lohhof / VC DJK München-Ost-Herrsching), should be their biggest competitors in this tournament.

The role of favorites is not so clearly distributed among men. The brothers Jonas and Benedikt Sagstetter (SC 53 Landshut), who will play in the hall for first division newcomers TSV Unterhaching, have won a Masters tournament. Like Benedikt Doranth and Julius Höfer from TSV Grafing, who faced each other in the final of the Bavarian championship in 2019 – with the better end for Höfer. The first division attacker Tim Peter from Herrsching was also at the top of the podium once this summer with his Mühldorf partner Fabian Bartsch. His teammates Jonas Kaminski and Jonas Meyer (without a club) also won a tournament. Lennart Kroha and Harry Schlegel (TSV Zirndorf / TSV Herrsching) are also among the favorites; like Sagstetter / Sagstetter, they are qualified for the German championships in Timmendorfer Strand at the beginning of September – and use the Bavarian title fights as a dress rehearsal. For men, 20 duos compete in the Munich Olympic Park, for women, 16 teams fight for victory. The competitions are climate-neutral for the first time. So that you can follow the fans, there is a free livestream on Saturday and Sunday at sportdeutschland.tv.
