The president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation, Francisco Egas, on Wednesday formalized the appointment of Argentina’s Gustavo Alfaro as coach for the South American qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Argentinian technician succeeds the Dutchman Jordi Cruyff, who resigned at the end of July even before having played any game. The son of legend Johan Cruyff was appointed head of the Ecuadorian selection in January 2020, but returned to Spain when the coronavirus appeared in the South American country.
“Gustavo Alfaro and his technical team will now be in charge of the national team and our guides during qualifying (for the 2022 World Cup, Editor’s note), the 2021 Copa America and, hopefully, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar”, Francisco Egas said during a press videoconference. Aged 58, Alfaro has coached several Argentinian clubs, including winning the South American Cup in 2007 with Arsenal, a club from the suburbs of Buenos Aires. He recently managed Boca Juniors, until the end of 2019. He is expected to make his debut in a friendly match yet to be decided in September, before the official debut in qualifying for the Mondal-2022 against Argentina in Buenos Aires. then Uruguay in Quito in October.
