Zanardi had to return to the intensive care unit

After three days at the neurorehabilitation center, former Formula 1 driver and four-time Paralympic winner Alex Zanardi had to return to the intensive care unit. The hospital in Milan, where the 53-year-old athlete, who was seriously injured in a handbike accident a month ago, was transferred after a sudden deterioration, informed the hospital.

Zanardi was taken to the Villa Beretta Neurological Rehabilitation Center in Costa Masnaga on Tuesday from a hospital in Siena, where he underwent three head surgeries since June 19, including a demanding five-hour facial reconstruction. Since the accident, he has been connected to lung ventilation and has been in artificial sleep, but his condition has stabilized, according to doctors. That has changed now.

Zanardi, who lost both legs in a car accident in 2001, suffered, among other things, severe head injuries and multiple bone fractures in the face in an accident near Pienza in June. This can result in brain damage and the risk of losing both eyes.
