Vezina Award finalists for the best NHL goalkeeper announced

The prize, which is voted on by the NHL General Manager, is awarded each year to the best goalkeeper. The winner will be announced during the conference final or before the Stanley Cup final.

Helebik played more than 50 games in the Winnipeg Jets for the fourth season in a row and was the best in the league with six “dry” games. Latvian goalkeeper Elvis Merzļikins, who represents the “Blue Jackets” unit of Columbus, shared the second place.

Helebik was also second in league wins (31) and seventh in rebounds (92.2%) among goalkeepers with at least 20 games. His balance was 31-21-5 with an average of 2.57 goals scored in the match when the NHL season ended on March 12 due to concerns about the coronavirus.

In the 2017/2018 season, Helebik remained second in the Vezina Award and will be the first goalkeeper in the history of the Jets / Atlanta Thrashers to win the award.

The difficult season ended with a balance of 26-8-6 and, along with Yaroslav Halak, helped the Boston Bruins win the Jennings Prize, allowing opponents to score the fewest goals (167) in the NHL.

He was the best in the league with an average of 2.12 goals per game, shared second place in the “dry” games with Merzlikin and was second in the league with a rebound percentage (92.9%) among the goalkeepers who played at least 20 games. He allowed his opponents to score just two or fewer goals in 27 of the 41 games and started the season with a series of 20 game points on the home arena ice (14-0-6). Rasks won the Vezina Award in the 2013/2014 season.

Last season’s Wezina Award winner Vasilevsky, with a balance of 35-14-3 for the third consecutive NHL season, is the leader in goal-scoring victories. From December 17 to February 15, he had 21 games in a row with at least one point scored for the team (19-0-2). The goalkeeper has conceded 2.56 puck in his own goal in the match and repelled 91.7% of the opponents’ throws, as well as left his goal three times, while “Lightning” with this season’s balance 43-21-6 twice won at least ten games in a row.

“I think the guys will agree that you can’t be a good goalkeeper without a great team,” Vasilevsky said. “It’s very difficult, especially in the NHL. Too many good players are trying to score. The whole team deserves the award.”

Vasilevsky won the Vezina Award last season and is a finalist in this rating for the third year in a row. He was able to become the first to win it for two seasons in a row. The last time such a surrender passed was to Martin Broder with the New Jersey “Devils” 2006/2007. and in the 2007/2008 season.

The 2020 NHL Awards were scheduled to be held on June 18 in Las Vegas, but on March 25 it was postponed.
