Tokyo Olympics: 77% of Japanese believe they will not be able to take place in 2021

The polls follow one another and look alike in Japan. A study by Japan News Network (JNN) reveals that 77% of Japanese respondents believe that the Olympic Games cannot be held in 2021. At the end of June, a survey carried out by Kyodo News and the television channel Tokyo MX ensured that more than half of the Japanese population wanted the competition to be postponed again, or even canceled.

In an interview with the sports daily Nikkan, the chairman of the Tokyo Games organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori, warned that the Games would not be held if the event could not take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

The organizers claim to seek to “simplify” the course of the competition. Since the announcement of the postponement, the Tokyo 2020 authorities have faced a series of problems, ranging from additional costs, to the safety of athletes and spectators.

While the organizers fear that the Covid-19 pandemic will not be brought under control in 2021, several avenues have been advanced in the Japanese daily Yomiuri. Athletes’ exits from the Olympic Village may only be authorized to reach training locations or events. The number of spectators could be lowered, while the Japanese capital expected the sale of 7.8 million tickets during his candidacy.
