The NFL team Washington has officially dropped its name “Redskins”, which is due to pressure from the Indian community and the team sponsors.

The franchise launched a team name review after several sponsors wrote to owner Daniel Snyder, threatening to remove the signature and terminate financial agreements, including the stadium naming agreement with FedEx.

A statement from the franchise Monday said, “On July 3rd, we announced the start of a thorough team name review. This review has started seriously.

“As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and the community up to date with our thinking.

“Today we announce that we will withdraw the Redskins name and logo after this review is completed.

“Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera work closely together to develop a new name and design approach that strengthens the reputation of our proud, traditional franchise and inspires our sponsors, fans and the community for the next 100 years.”

The franchise company was nicknamed Redskins in 1933 when it was based in Boston and was previously called Braves. Team owner George Preston Marshall moved the club to Washington in 1937.
