The 4-time champion Kelsey Chugg survives an extra pair of holes for the female mooring Am

MIDWAY – By his own admission, Kelsey Chugg had no intention of competing with most of the field in the quarterfinals of the Utah Women’s State Amateur on Wednesday afternoon – certainly not in terms of distance.

Her own opponent, Lehi High’s Lila Galeai, was pushing her off the tee with her driver – sometimes close to 100 yards, she joked.

The four-time champion, however, had some tricks: longevity and endurance are the main ones.

Chugg survived a couple of extra-hole match-play matches, including holding Galeai in 20 holes in the quarterfinals of the 114th edition of the amateur championship at Soldier Hollow golf course.

“I just resisted,” said Chugg after exiting his 41st hole of the day. “Then it started to get very windy and takes it off.

“I’m just getting too old,” he said brazenly. “These girls probably play 36 every day.”

Chugg followed Galeai with a hole as they launched themselves at no. 18. And once again, Galeai blew her up.

But the American Mid-Amateur 2017 champion who plays off the Bonneville golf course took five woods from her bag and then hit an iron shot near the pin to force the extras.

“I only tried to play my game. But at the start of the game, having been held back by how long I was, he was definitely annoying me, “Chugg said, adding that he has never seen a golfer drive the ball like Galeai.” Usually I’m up there with longer players, and she screamed it from me.

“I saw her pull the driver out, and my coach convinced me in the woods. We knew that five woods would not enter, but let’s do it there and leave it near. It worked. “

Chugg also went into extra holes in Round of 16, draining a six-foot flying shot into the 21st hole to survive the Berlin Long. Lone Peak’s second year increased from 4 down with six holes left to force extra holes before Chugg resisted.

Long broke her little bird on the 21st hole par-3, sending four-time champion Chugg to the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

“I was just trying to be poor today, I guess,” said Chugg. “The first game, I was losing oil. In the second game, I had to make good shots. It was so hard. “

Stroke Tess Blair’s medal survived Carissa Graft, 1 ahead to face Chugg in the semifinals. In the other semifinal at 8 am, Grace Summerhays will face reigning champion Kerstin Fotu, who has won four holes in a row on the back nine against teammate BYU Naomi Soifua, 3 and 2.

Sunbin Seo emptied a hole in number 12 to pull one of the Summerhays into the quarterfinals. The great success of Timpview has maintained the deficit of a blow on the junior amateur champion in charge of the girls of Utah before remaining timeless on the green n. 17.

Thursday’s semifinals will begin at 8 am in Soldier Hollow.
