The NFL Players Association wants the financial consequences of the pandemic to be absorbed by the salary cap from 2022 to 2030. Some owners want to get the hang of it sooner than that.

According to a source in the league, several owners participating in Monday’s negotiation session with the NFLPA lobbied for losses due to the virus to be absorbed in 2020 and 2021, with salary reimbursements applying this year and a ceiling salary reduced next year.

Some view the position as a posture, given that teams will not want a greatly reduced ceiling in 2021, as this will force them to cut not only veteran backups but key starters. In any event, the financial impact of the pandemic will create problems for the NFL and the NFLPA. Today’s players should want to postpone this in the future, because taking the hit now will hit them in the wallet, either taking part of their salary in 2020 and / or 2021 – or all of it.
