Crying Kylian Mbappé limped with an apparent ankle injury while Paris Saint-Germain defeated Saint-Étienne by 10 men 1-0 to win the French Cup on Friday.

Mbappé’s injury, which returned to the sidelines with crutches, took the finish line from a success of the 13th Cup which reached the record and raised concerns in view of the Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta next month.

Half of central Saint-Étienne, Loïc Perrin, was expelled in the 30th minute for awkwardly throwing Mbappé down as he jerked past him, and Mbappé’s right ankle seemed to tie under him.

“It just broke a little,” Mbappé told French President Emmanuel Macron after the final as PSG players were about to collect their medals.

Perrin was making his last appearance for Saint-Étienne – 17 years after his debut – and his foul triggered a brief attack of raging thrust between the sides.

Neymar scored PSG’s initial close-range goal in the 14th after goalkeeper Jessy Moulin saved Mbappé’s shot.

It was difficult for Saint-Étienne, who hit the post with striker Denis Bouanga in the beginning. Bouanga had a shot well saved by goalkeeper Keylor Navas later in the first half.

But Moulin also had to make a superb one-handed save to keep Ángel Di María’s curling attack out.

Macron spoke to the players for a long time before the kick-off. A maximum of 5,000 fans were admitted to the Stade de France due to coronavirus restrictions, but only 2,805 actually participated.

PSG, who lost last season’s final due to penalties, had not played a competitive game since 11 March when they faced Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the Champions League 16 group.

The previous Saint-Étienne game was three days earlier in the French league, before it was canceled with 10 rounds remaining on April 30th.

Despite having an extra player, PSG hardly threatened in the second half in addition to a couple of speculative shots well saved by Moulin.
