Marcus Stroman of Mets makes progress in injury rehabilitation, takes part in defensive exercises

Marcus Stroman showed tangible progress in his return from a torn left calf muscle on Friday by participating in a series of defensive exercises.

After a simulated four-innings game – part of his routine to maintain arm strength while he was on the injured list – he completed the pitcher throwing practice at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

“It was a very productive day for him,” said manager Luis Rojas of Atlanta before the Mets game against the Braves.

Fielding his position, rather than actually throwing, is the biggest problem during his rehabilitation. Friday was his first time to face live hiters in two weeks.

Rojas said he doesn’t know when Stroman could join the rotation of the Mets.

“I definitely have to be together and talk about the pitch count and what it was about,” said Rojas. “I don’t know the exact count he had. I know he did four innings, then four times. And then let’s see what is the next step. “

Left-handed David Peterson, filling in for Stroman, held the Red Sox in two heats in 5 2/3 innings during his Major League debut Tuesday night. Sunday is scheduled to take on the Braves.

McNeil sits down

For the first time this season, Jeff McNeil was out of lineup, replaced on third base by rookie Andres Gimenez.

Rojas said it was a routine day off for McNeil and was not related to his defensive problems. He made four mistakes in seven games.

“The more striking, of course, the more action he will have on the field directing the bases and doing everything,” said Rojas. “Let’s give Jeff one day.”

McNeil added, who often dealt with minor physical problems last year: “My body had a good beating.”

As for the launch problems, more practice is needed with coach Gary DiSarcina, said Rojas.

“Just a few tough games here and there,” said McNeil. “I feel good out there. I’m just trying to put my legs under me, bring my arm where I really want it to be. I just have to go out there and work every single day and get a little better. “

While the roster is shaking

The Mets placed the Rene Rivera receiver on the IL with a hyperextended left (non-pitching) elbow.

They filled his roster post with right-handed Franklyn Kilome, their return in July 2018 with Asdrubal Cabrera with the Phillies.

Kilome, 25, hasn’t played above double A and hasn’t launched since 2018 due to Tommy John’s intervention.
